The Portuguese have a higher level of confidence in the courts and the judicial system than in parliament and the government, according to a report by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) using data from 2023. According to the inquiry, which was carried out between October 25 and November 27 last year, coinciding with the fall of António Costa’s government, around 50% of the Portuguese say they trust the courts and the judicial system. On the other hand, the percentage of the population with high or moderately high confidence in the national government and parliament was 30%. The percentage of people who indicated high levels of trust in the government fell by more than ten percentage points in Portugal compared to 2021, but the OECD itself pointed out that these results may be related to a “generalised decrease in trust in the entire political system”.
