More shopping centres

LARGE RETAIL and real estate businesses are still applying to build in Portimão, with six new commercial centres planned for the county, covering an area equivalent to the size of 100 football pitches.

The construction of a 5,000sqm shopping centre in Aldeia do Carrasco by the Mosqueteiros group, who own the Intermarché chain of supermarkets, has already been approved.

Plans for a 3,000sqm shopping complex from the Jerónimos group, which will include a Feira Nova supermarket, an Electric Co electrical appliances shop and a New Code clothing store, has also been approved by the regional commission for commercial licences.

Portimão’s new 12,000sqm retail centre is currently under construction near Boavista. French multinational, Bouygues Immobilier, is also investing in the county’s largest commercial centre of 32,000sqm.

Yet another shopping centre is planned, with a total area of 30,000sqm. However, approval of this project is not certain because a development plan for the Taipas area in which it would be constructed is still being made.

A sixth shopping centre with an area of around 30,000sqm including cinemas, restaurants a supermarket and 70 shops is also planned for Portimão’s Complexo Desportivo, sports centre.
