More than 80% of ‘missing teachers’ placed “without specific qualifications for subject”

The ‘normality and tranquility’ sketched by education minister João Costa for the start of the school year is coming ever more into perspective. In the almost 3,000 hours that are missing teachers this academic year, “the large majority has gone to candidates without the (relevant) pedagogic training. It means that a teacher qualified to teach biology could end up taking classes for English, or Geography. Says Expresso, “more than 80% of the teachers called are not trained for the classes” they will required to give. Not surprisingly, syndicates are unimpressed.
