ASAE (health and food safety) inspectors have apprehended more than six tonnes of live snails today in an operation at an industrial food packaging unit in Sabugal. Their justification was that the large bundles of snails were devoid of ‘obligatory information’ on where they had come from/ when they were picked, etc. These will have been snails from “a third country”, explain reports – and without the statutory information, there is no assurance that they will have been safe for human consumption.
