MotoGP madness returns to Algarve

Tickets to see the world’s best MotoGP riders are still available

Speed, drama and a lot of excitement are promised for the MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix, which will take place at the Algarve International Racetrack (AIA) in Portimão between Friday and Sunday (March 22-24).

The world’s best motorcyclists will be taking on the Algarvean ‘rollercoaster’ (as the racetrack has been dubbed by many riders) for the second race of the 2024 MotoGP World Championship calendar. Portugal’s star rider Miguel Oliveira will be among them, certainly hoping for a repeat of his stunning 2020 victory. However, he is trying to keep expectations under control, as he joined a new team and is racing on a new bike this season.

“There’s not much I can promise. What people can expect is I’ll do my best, as always. Last year I said the same thing. If my best is fighting for a top-10, top-5 or podium spot, or the title… I’ll do it,” the 29-year-old rider told sports newspaper A Bola ahead of the race.

In the inaugural race of the year in Qatar, Oliveira finished in 15th place. “I am feeling well, I have adapted well to the new bike. We have greater potential, but we are still trying to understand how to make the most of everything. But we will get there,” he told Rádio Comercial earlier this month. He also spoke of his success at the Portimão racetrack, describing it as a circuit he is always “very fast at.”

The clear favourite, however, appears to be Francisco Bagnaia, the two-time world champion who won the Portuguese GP last year and also finished first in this season’s first race, although former world champions like Fabio Quartararo and Marc Márquez are always names to keep an eye on.

Outside of racing, there will be a new Fan Zone set up near the racetrack’s main stands, with DJ sets, concerts and “moments of interactions with riders”, as well as stalls selling MotoGP merchandise and street food. The Fan Zone will open at 4pm on Thursday, 8.15am on Saturday and 8.30am on Friday and Sunday.

Tickets for the Portuguese Grand Prix are still available and can be purchased online, with prices starting at €55 for a one-day ticket for the Sunday race and €65 for a weekend pass. VIP tickets are also for sale.
