Mystery over what really happened to ‘missing German digital nomad’ persists

German investigators say he was burnt to death; PJ ‘has no evidence’

The mystery over what really happened to missing German digital nomad Artur Lorenz persists.

Earlier this month, German investigators concluded that the 39-year-old “was burnt to death in his camper van” in Viseu.

Everything pointed to Artur having been attacked and killed the month before, shortly after he had been in contact with his family, saying he was on his way home.

But today Correio da Manhã claims PJ judicial police “guarantee” there were no human bones found in the burnt out wreckage of Lorenz’s Vito campervan.

“This certainly, transmitted to CM by an official source, contradicts the conclusions of specialists contracted by the family who collected evidence from the van that had been left abandoned on land in Moure de Carvalhal for two months”, writes the paper.

The German specialists “say they sent the ashes to a laboratory, which analysed them and now guarantees that they are of a human being”.

At the time of his trip to Viseu, German investigator Axel Hehl, told reporters. “There was a body here. Of that I have no doubt. It was burnt at at least 1000ºC, because whoever did it used diesel to set it alight”.

According to CM, this evidence should have been passed to the Police Scientific Laboratory, but the laboratory “received nothing”.

At the same time, noticiasaominuto is carrying an account citing Lorenz’s sister, Sabine Schell. She insists on Axel Hehl’s theory: “We believe that Artur was burnt in his camper”, she told the news online.

Bones were found in the van”, she added – stressing that all this was “transmitted to Portuguese authorities” who “continued to say nothing, as always”.

According to Sabine Schell, the only reason the family hired Axel Hehl and his team was because Portuguese police appeared not to be taking her brother’s disappearance seriously.

Noticias ao minuto claims the family is now “going to take measures”.

And while this wrangle goes on, there does not appear to be any explanation as to who might have had a reason to attack Artur Lorenz, and then torch his and property.
