New Artisanal and Recreational Fishing Association created in Altura

APALA is a non-profit association created to preserve the legacy of older generations of fishermen.

The Altura community has created a new Association for Artisanal and Recreational Fishing (APALA – Associação de Pesca Artesanal e Lúdica de Altura).

This non-profit Association is designed to promote sustainable and recreational fishing, environmental education, appreciation of the fishing culture and pedagogical action for all ages.

Its main objective is to preserve the fishing activity, ensuring it remains an essential part of the Eastern Algarve tradition for future generations.

From a pedagogical point of view, the Association will focus on fishing training for all ages in collaboration with several training entities.

As a non-profit collective, APALA says its objective «is to increasingly develop everything that was left by Altura fishermen and make a better and noble association».

The Association says it is “an environmentally friendly association concerned with the future of the sea as well as the subsequent generations. Being an agent of change by promoting environmental education and local development is one of the aspects the new Association intends to contribute to and highlight».

The Association’s first environmental preservation activity, during which APALA members rolled up their sleeves and collected rubbish in Alagoa Beach, took place on Saturday, November 25.
