New Chief of Staff of Navy named

President Marcelo has promoted vice-admiral Jorge Manuel Nobre de Sousa to admiral, nominating him as the new Chief of Staff of the Navy, to take up the position officially on Friday (December 27). Jorge de Sousa will thus be taking over the position vacated by Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo who (according to reports) decided against a second mandate in the Navy in order to run for President of Portugal in the elections taking place in a year’s time. In a note announcing Gouveia e Melo’s replacement, President Marcelo thanked the outgoing Admiral for his ā€œhighly qualified performanceā€ over the last three years at the helm, decorating him with the Grand Cross of the Order of Christ – an honour given for distinguished service in the performance of functions in sovereign positions.
