A new volcanic cave, around 170 metres long and with important geological structures, has been discovered on the island of Pico, in the Azores, following electrification work in the municipality of São Roque. The discovery of what is now called Gruta de Santana, was announced by the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Action, Alonso Miguel, today when he visited the site accompanied by the Regional Director for the Environment and Climate Action, Ana Rodrigues. The new cave come replete with “stalactites, gas bubbles, side benches, small overlapping tubes, lava balls and striated walls”, according to a note released by the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM).
