Newly built roundabout “swallows” car in Faro.

On Friday, a sinkhole formed on Estrada Senhora da Saúde in Faro, causing a newly constructed roundabout to cave in and partially engulf a car.

Locals enjoying the shade of the Âncora snack bar terrace on Friday afternoon couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw a flood of water start flowing down the Estrada Senhora da Saúde. The flood happened close to a newly built roundabout at an intersection known as a black spot for several accidents.

“It looked like a swimming pool!” they exclaimed. And if the flood was surprising, at around 17h30, they heard the sound of a car being “swallowed” in the asphalt that had given way due to the accumulation of water caused by a ruptured pipe, opening a huge hole in that very busy artery of the city.

The unusual scene did not cause any casualties, and Fagar | Faro, Water and Waste Management quickly initiated the repair of the leak.

Older residents of that region reported that this is not the first time the water network has been damaged in that location and that problems occurred during the construction of the roundabout, one of the most recent in the city of Faro.

They also say that the ruptured pipe must have been leaking for some time, judging by the size of the hole that opened overnight.
