No accounting for taste…

APAA are now looking for new venues for their ‘Pop-Up’ shops

The critical part of any charitable association lies in its accountability. How it conducts its business and where the cash and donations flow.

“We are at scratching head time.” Jenny Clarke, president of Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA), is at the sharp end. However, at the important counting buttons end, is their Treasurer Jackie who explains: “We had a specific query on our operational side of things and found, all too late, that our accountant had been taken ill. Unfortunately, the office had not notified us.”

It all seemed to be doom and gloom. “But looking on the bright side of life, we have more than sufficient funds, totally accountable and in good hands. We just need a professional certified Contabilista (accountant) who understands charity work for the IRS.”

Jackie’s worried look transforms into a smile. “It’s the cookies and jams and stuff.” A veritable minefield. “Donations. Goods that have no IVA but when re-sold do have IVA.”

Meanwhile, the intrepid team APAA headed by Jenny and Anita are ploughing their way through the shelves and storage of both charity shops at Alvor and Silves. “We have some beautiful jewellery and collections of household goods. Beautiful dining sets, cutlery, glasses. A whole new concept of re-furbishing dining, kitchen and lounge all in our fabulous shops.”

The association’s ‘Pop-Up’ shops managed by Anita have reached an all-time record. Trying to get the stock right for the marketplace and selling. Not just a pretty face.

Jenny’s happy smile returns. ‘Jimmy’, Jenny’s older 15-year-old doggy, has returned from the vets with an all-clear. His cough and wheezing down to old age.

World Wildlife Fund have opened a branch in Lisbon. Their website is not yet complete, but ardent followers of WWF keep on browsing and checking. They launched their office by distributing fluffy stuffed animals around Lisbon’s metro.

APAA are now looking for new venues for their ‘Pop-Up’ shops. Perhaps readers would like to offer a suggestion. All that is needed: a friendly open space and some sturdy tables. If possible, a suitable changing area (Ladies). Suitable seating for weather fair or foul. Refreshments, lunch or snacks. Easy parking.
