No Christmas lights as the needy are the priority

Lagoa municipality will not be putting up Christmas lights this year, “saving thousands of euros” which will be used to help the council’s needy families, said the Lagoa Mayor. However, the population is being asked to help bring some festive spirit to the council by putting up their own Christmas decorations.

Mayor Francisco Martins said: “As newcomers in the town hall, our team (PS party elected in September) has not had the time to check the process relating to festive lighting, so this year Lagoa council will again not see Christmas lights and decorations going up.

“This type of spending, in times of economic crisis and taking into consideration the town hall’s own finances, is not seen as a priority,” he said, adding that “thousands of euros will be saved and channelled for other more pressing situations, such as helping needy families”.

He added that fireworks for New Year’s Eve were also out of the question.

However, Martins is encouraging residents and business people to decorate their houses and establishments with Christmas lights and decorations and thus bring some festive cheer to their localities.
