Despite the torrential rain, APAA followers always show their support
Jenny Clarke, president of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA), and her stalwart ‘Pop-Up’ Shop Manager Anita Wight, ducking the heavy rain and wind, still managed to make a smacking good amount at the ‘O Tasco Pop-Up’, in Senhora do Verde, near Portimão, on March 10.
“Despite the calamitous weather, we had our die-hard customers, members and followers calling in. Not to mention the wonderful girls at O Tasco. They are always on the prowl!” Anita adds. “We had some beautiful jewellery to sell, hand-made and all original pieces.” This, despite the hail stones beating down and torrential rain creating havoc. But there were rainbows too.
March 20 marks the start of spring (aka Primavera Equinox), the clocks moving forward one hour during the early hours of the 30th. The aficionados with more than one pet will have started feeding them a little later to compromise that extra hour. “You can fool one dog or maybe two, but if you have several, they become a gang of predators bullying you to get their dinner ready.”
Jenny’s been clocking up the miles to the vets. “Not only because of our APAA friends, but also my two. Colin was coughing and wheezing. Vet and I tried to track down the problem. I realised I had changed his collar for tics and fleas. So, after removing it, he stopped.” Check out sprays and collars when canine or feline friend shows sign of a problem. Scratching, coughing, wheezing. First signs.
In the meantime, Jimmy, her other dog, has gone to Loulé for a scan. Fingers crossed. “They are both around 12 years old and showing signs of old-age, I guess.”
On the bright side, “thanks go to Helen and Stephen for making beautiful handcrafted individual pieces of jewellery. They are now helping APAA stock up shops and ‘Pop-Ups’ with their works-of-art.” Not only earrings and bracelets but also colourful dingle-dangles to decorate your bag or scarf. Motifs include Tree of Life, Sun, Moon, and Stars, but also the occasional Feline Sitting on a Cloud.
The special Charity Wellbeing Day held by Paul and Pasi in Portimão was a sell-out. Bookings were made in advance, but people still turned up hoping for a quick treat. Pets need People. So, thank you!
