Number of forest fire crimes drops significantly in first half of 2024

Portugal’s GNR police recorded 533 forest fire crimes, arrested 16 people and identified 131 suspects as part of its ‘Safe Forest 2024’ operation since the beginning of the year and until May 31.

The numbers have reduced significantly compared to the same period in 2023, when GNR registered 1,790 forest fire offences, detained more than twice as many people, 42, and identified four times as many suspects, 511.
