The number one Portuguese tennis player beat the Spanish legend in two sets: 6-3 and 6-2.
It was a historic Sunday for Portuguese tennis! Nuno Borges defeated the legendary Rafa Nadal in two sets in Bastad, Sweden, securing his first title on the ATP circuit.
It was a clash between a very inspired 27-year-old Portuguese tennis player and a 38-year-old giant in obvious physical difficulties. But the Spaniard’s physical condition doesn’t take the shine off the Portuguese number one’s triumph.
On a bright sunny day in Sweden, the Portuguese tennis player started strong and soon won the first point, maintaining the advantage until the end of the first set, which he won 6-3.
In the following set, the Portuguese tennis player displayed even more dominance, while Nadal seemed to struggle, resulting in a 6-2 win and claiming the championship in just over an hour and a half.
“I don’t know what to say. I had been waiting for this moment for a while. Everyone wanted Rafa to win. I tried to play my best tennis. I don’t know what to say. I’m really emotional”, admitted the Portuguese player at the end of the game.
“The atmosphere was incredible. Everyone wanted Rafa to win, even me, but the atmosphere was very friendly. It was a great day to play tennis. I’m really happy”, added Borges, visibly moved.

Nuno Borges is now the second Portuguese tennis player to win an ATP tour title, following João Sousa’s three titles: Kuala Lumpur in 2013, Valencia in 2015, and Estoril Open in 2018.
