Portugal’s nursing syndicate SEP has announced a strike for the central region (ARSC) on Wednesday February 22 due to authorities’ lack of recognising so-called ‘points’ allowing progression in careers. According to the syndicate, ARSC has made it a policy not to count points for the second six months in every year. The central health authority is also refusing to pay money due since January 2018, “as has happened with all other public sector workers”. As Lusa explains, ARSC is ‘decentralised’ from Lisbon, and takes in 78 municipalities in the districts of Coimbra, Aveiro, Viseum, Guarda, Castelo Branco and Leiria where the population stands at over 1.5 million.
