Olhão spreads Christmas cheer with giant Bolo-rei

Cake weighs 250 kilos and will be served to everyone at Jardim Patrão Joaquim Lopes

The festive season is about to get even sweeter in Olhão as the town prepares to serve up a massive Christmas treat for everyone to enjoy.

This Saturday, December 14, a giant bolo-rei – Portugal’s iconic Christmas cake – will be offered to locals and visitors, courtesy of the municipal council and renowned local pastry chef Filipe Martins of Kubidoce.

The event will take place at 3pm at Jardim Patrão Joaquim Lopes, along the town’s waterfront. Weighing a staggering 250 kilograms, the unveiling of the cake promises to be an unmissable spectacle.

This year’s cake will incorporate 40 kg of flour, 15 kg of brown sugar, zest from 150 oranges, 25 lemons, and 10 tangerines, as well as 70 kg of nuts, 25 kg of candied fruits, and a touch of port wine or black cherry. The cake is made using natural fermentation and free from chemical additives and hydrogenated fats, the baker says, highlighting that the tradition of serving the cake is 13 years old.

Mayor António Miguel Pina has spoken highly of Filipe Martins, highlighting his contributions to elevating Olhão’s reputation in the culinary world, and invited everyone to take part in the celebration.

It’s an excellent opportunity to taste Olhão’s giant Bolo-rei and begin to celebrate this Christmas in the best company,” the mayor said.
