Victims were carrying out ‘forestry maintenance’ work
An explosion at Alcochete Air Force field firing range, near Lisbon, today has killed one civilian and seriously injured another.
The two men were working on forestry maintenance at the military installation when what is described as “a land based explosive device” detonated.
Few details have been given so far.
The alert went out at 1.45pm. Several emergency responders attended.
According to reports, the two victims – working for a private company contracted by the Air Force – were cutting pine trees outside the perimeter of the firing range.
An inquiry has been opened by the Air Force which has not yet made any kind of official statement. ND
