One dead following attempted robbery of PSP agent in Algés

Case handed over to PJ judicial police

One person died in the early hours of this morning following an attempted robbery of a PSP agent in Algés, in the municipality of Oeiras, a source from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) has confirmed.

According to the source, the PSP agent was approached by a couple at around 3.30am in Algés and forced at gunpoint to go to the ATM.

It is not clear if money was withdrawn/ handed over. Lusa’s report simply says the agent was then ‘forced’ to go home.

Later, in Benfica, Lisbon, in Rua Atriz Maria Matos, the PSP agent “managed to access his service weapon and fired at one of the suspects, hitting him in the chest”.

The sequence of events is still a little garbled, and may be better explained in a subsequent report. It sounds like the agent was ‘forced’ to his home, potentially on the understanding that he had money for his assailants there.

Says Lusa, “the second suspect has been identified by authorities, but so far it has not been possible to confirm whether or not he has been arrested”.

The case has been handed over to PJ Judicial Police.

This is not an ‘isolated incident’ of police being targeted, however: four PSP agents were hurt over the weekend after being called to a café in the complicated district of Moura, Sintra, as a result of a ‘disturbance’, allegedly involving a woman attacking the café owner.

The woman reportedly turned on one of the agents, while the three others were injured by people who threw stones at them.

This incident ended with four arrests, writes Correio da Manhã.
