Open Day at Eastern Algarve’s stunning salt marshes

Event will feature several free activities

The stunning Natural Reserve of the Salt Marshes of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António will be the focal point of an Open Day event featuring several free activities on Sunday, April 14.

Taking place between 9am and 5.30pm at the Natural Reserve Interpretation Centre at Sapal de Venta Moinhos in Castro Marim. The event is open to anyone who would like to enjoy a day of nature-related activities at one of the Algarve’s most beloved natural havens.

The list of activities includes a hike, a BTT mountain bike ride, birdwatching, archery, horse rides, a Zumba dancing class and much more. There will also be a Fair of Traditional Products, featuring “the best delicacies and handicraft of the region”, and blood pressure and blood sugar screenings.

Live music and dance performances are also scheduled, as well as an array of activities organised by the local scouts groups.

All activities are free, although some – such as the birdwatching event, BTT ride and hike – require registration until April 11 on the council’s website.

The event is organised by the Commission of Co-management of the Natural Reserve of the Salt Marshes of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António.

The Natural Reserve of Sapal de Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, located in the southeast of the Algarve, near the mouth of the Guadiana River, covers an area of 2,307,99 hectares.

“It encompasses salt marshes, brackish water bodies, salt pans, and channels that extend across the municipalities of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, hosting a high number of fauna and flora species. This internationally significant wetland was the first natural reserve to be created in Portugal, in 1975,” says AMAL, the Algarve Municipalities Association, which is part of the commission.
