Opposition calls on government to take steps to apply euthanasia law

Secretary-general of Portugal’s main opposition Socialist Party (PS), Pedro Nuno Santos, has urged the government today to apply the country’s existing law on assisted dying. At the end of a visit to a school reopening after the summer holidays in Cascais, Santos was referring to an open letter signed by more than 250 personalities demanding that the rules regulating the ‘euthanasia law’ are drawn up. “The government has to fulfil its role (…) the overwhelming majority of the Portuguese people are fine with the law that was passed”, so it is time it was able to come into effect, he told reporters.
