Opposition parties lambast education minister’s u-turn over teachers’ frozen pay

Opposition parties have sprung to the attack of education minister João Costa following his ‘surprise’ u-turn on the issue of returning teachers’ ‘stolen’ pay, and in the context of the shock report by PISA (the international programme for evaluating school-pupils), which shows how poorly Portugal’s children are performing. The bottom line, is that opposition parties see the Socialist regime of the last eight years as having contributed to a ‘generational regression’ in education, showing how little the government really valued the State education system.
