Overdose deaths increased by 16% in 2023 compared to the previous year, totalling 80, the latest annual from the Institute for Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies (ICAD) reveals today, highlighting an increase in these deaths with methadone, although cocaine is the drug most responsible for mortality.
The report has been presented to parliament ,explaining, with regard to mortality related to drug use, that of the 387 deaths recorded in 2023 with the presence of illicit substances, 80 (21%) were overdoses, while cocaine was responsible for 65% of all deaths, opiates for 36% and methadone also for 36%.
