Owner of Lisbon ‘tourist rip-off restaurant’ has gun pointed to head

The owner of Lisbon eaterie Made in Correeiros, now infamous for its high prices, is back in the news this week over a stolen Bentley Continental.

The €250,000 car was purportedly taken from a garage in the middle of the day by a gang that used a computer to hack into the security system.

Owner José Manuel Cardoso reported the theft and has since been the victim of a daytime ‘stick up’: the message being “drop the case, or else…”

Bizarrely, reports suggest Cardoso’s own son may have been involved in the Bentley heist, and the consequent stick-up.

For now, the two men have been arrested and released pending a court date, while the current situation of the Bentley remains confused.

Made in Correeiros hit national headlines last year after complaints started mounting about crazy prices.

A well-publicised bill for one water, a small beer, a couvert of bread and cheese, a shared starter and a shellfish main course shows one couple was charged €299.

Other stories talk of clients calling the police after being presented with even larger bills.

Tripadvisor’s website carries various photographs of bills showing very high prices.

Of 601 evaluations, 91% of those writing in classified the restaurant as “terrible”. One per cent considered it “excellent”, while highlighted comments are not complementary.

Since the controversy it has been reported that Made in Correeiros has changed its name.
