Paderne Castle open for visits on Wednesdays

Paderne Castle will be open for visits from the public every Wednesday in August and September, Albufeira Council has announced.

Doors will be open from 9.30am to 1pm. Admission is free and there is no need to book a visit in advance, says the council, adding it is “an excellent opportunity to get to know one of the most interesting monuments of the region’s history”.

Council historians will be on site to guide visitors.

The 12th century castle is one of the municipality’s biggest historic treasures but has remained mostly closed for years due to renovation works.

It is said to be one of the original castles that occupy the shield of the Portuguese national flag and has been classified as a “public interest building” since 1971.
