Paedophile arrested in Algarve extradited to Brazil

Man will serve a nine-year, seven-month sentence in Brazil

A 43-year-old Brazilian man, wanted for multiple child sexual abuse and rape crimes, has been extradited from Portugal to Brazil after being arrested in the Algarve.

The fugitive was returned to Brazil last week under heavy police escort, reports Brazilian news portal g1.

The man was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice and had fled Brazil in September 2018. After years in hiding, he was finally arrested by Portuguese authorities in October. On February 5, he was flown back to Brazil, arriving at Belo Horizonte International Airport, where he was escorted by federal police officers.

The convicted offender had been sentenced to nine years and seven months in prison for a series of child sexual abuse and rape offenses committed in 2013. According to Portugal’s PJ criminal police, the crimes took place on multiple occasions and in different locations. The suspect used his position of influence over a 13-year-old victim to coerce them into sexual acts, PJ police add.

Following his extradition, the man was taken to Presídio Inspetor José Martinho Drumond, a prison facility in Ribeirão das Neves, where he will begin serving his sentence.
