Parliament is to debate a 23,000-strong petition today calling for a ban on the use of mobile phones at school – a measure recommended by the ministry of education but only adopted by a minority of schools. ‘VIVER o recreio escolar, sem telas de smartphones!’, (‘LIVE the school playground, without smartphone screens!’) – already been discussed at the level of parliamentary committees – comes to the House, accompanied by two bills, from BE and PAN, and draft resolutions from PCP, CDS-PP, Livre and PAN. Currently, the Pupil and School Ethics Statute prohibits the use of mobile phones in classrooms, but not in playgrounds: petitioners want to see the ban extended to the playground up to the 9th year.
