“Peaceful airport disruption” planned for June 1

Climáximo, the environmental movement that has landed a number of activists in court, has announced a ‘peaceful airport sit-in’ to “disrupt the normal functioning” of Lisbon airport on June 1.

Until then, it encourages its supporters to join “the preparations for this day, which can only go ahead if we are many, refusing to accept that they are stealing our future”. (‘They’ in the last sentence are “governments and companies” which Climáximo sees as “refusing to change course” from a “murderous system that depends on burning fossil fuels to function”.

According to a report put out by Lusa, the action on June 1 will begin in Alameda (Lisbon), “from where participants will take public transport to Lisbon airport”.

All in all, authorities will have enough information and advance warning to put contingency measures in place – but it may be advisable for anyone planning a journey to avoid Lisbon airport on June 1.

Lusa’s report goes into all Climáximo’s demands and desires, squarely blaming the Portuguese government for “guaranteeing profits for fossil companies at the cost of the death and misery of millions of people”.

Lusa also writes that Climáximo “proposes a plan to dismantle commercial, military and freight aviation, advocating the immediate elimination of short-haul flights, such as Lisbon-Porto, and private jets, which are considered superfluous and unnecessary”.
