APAA received an award for a “job well done” in the name of animal welfare by Portimão Mayor Álvaro Bila
Totting up the time that it takes to whizz from Staples to the Câmara’s offices (city hall) in Portimão and then total up the takings from the Convent’bio (Lagoa) pop-up stall, a breathing space for a toasty. And off again.
Jenny Clarke, president of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA), has had her friends visiting in between. “Talk about burning the candle at both ends!” Umm?
“APAA had a wonderful award from Portimão Mayor (Álvaro Bila). A ‘well-done’ for all the hard work our teams have put in for the improvement of the lives of abandoned animals and feral cat-colonies.”
Jenny and Zélia, their ‘Cat-woman’, are delighted. Not only, but also, “Our tote-bag photo competition attracted over 40 entrants. Jackie, our treasurer, and Carlos Filipe, the judging photographer, are just putting the finishing touches to the artwork.” First order should be ready for BLiP at their stand.
“Too many excellent entrants. It was decided two cat winners on one tote and the two doggies on the other.” The entrant’s fees will pay for the artwork, initial outlay and production. Great!

A rescue cat lodging at Jenny’s until recovered, a six-month tabby cat, was found on the road outside their pop-up restaurant in Odelouca. “The owner asked us to help. X-rays showed no organ damage but looks like the pelvis is badly broken.” They named the cat after the owner. ‘Carla’ is determined, bless her, to struggle on come what may. Despite all the pain and confusion, the little cat is successfully pulling herself up into the litter-tray. “Hopefully the exercise and food will help to strengthen her for any surgery.” The cost? Jenny shrugs. “Once Carla has pulled through the worst, we will consult with the orthopaedic surgeon and take it from there.” Funding is already being planned.
