A big emphatic “No!”. Jenny Clarke, President of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve, is only too aware of the word ‘compromise’.
“The problem is people love animals, but they have to respect that like humans, each animal has different needs to be recognised and cared for properly.”
A happy household, a happy pet. “Not always do cats and dogs get on in the same environment. You’re lucky of course, if they can and do co-exist happily.” Choose wisely. If the cat or dog has been the star turn, introducing a different animal species can change the dynamics. “It may take time, having them in separate parts of the home to start may help, especially if it was out and out war when first introduced.”
True to say, some dogs and cats don’t even like their own species. They want to be The One and Only One. There is a problem, of course, when a couple get together and want a friendly friend and they both have completely different tastes.
One may be a cat lover, the other a doggie person. “Choose a dog that is of a friendly nature, there are breeds which are known to be super-cool and friendly, easy around children and animals.” In other words, don’t get a huge hunting hound to live in peace with a cuddly kitten. “Nature will always take its course. You wouldn’t put a bunch of budgies to fly around a room with a couple of hungry cats.” Mm. Check out your animals first. The internet can be helpful or talk to the vet!
