Thomas McAllister’s death described in UK media as “tragic incident”
PJ police are investigating the death of a 25-year-old Rangers fan in Lisbon on Thursday, due to ‘doubts’ that persist “although the scenario of crime is excluded”.
Correio da Manhã tabloid describes the death of the Scottish club fan as “a sudden illness while he was watching the game on a television in a hotel”.
UK media reports refer to a “tragic incident”, adding that “the circumstances of his death remain unknown”.
Thomas McAllister travelled to Lisbon with other fans to watch the Europa League match with Benfica.
According to the Daily Mail, he died “after they (meaning Rangers) drew 2-2 with Benfica”.
The club has described its “profound sadness” over the news. CEO James Bisgrove said it “has hit everyone at the club extremely hard, as I am sure it will all of our supporters. Nobody should ever go to a football match and not return home”.
CM’s report describes PSP police and INEM having been called to the scene, “but death was confirmed on Thursday night.
“The PSP has communicated the case to the Public Prosecutor’s Office which yesterday delegated the investigation of the death of the Scottish man to the PJ homicide section. Doubts persist, even though the scenario of crime is excluded. For this reason there will be an autopsy”, says the paper.
A young father, Thomas McAllister’s death has prompted a flood of tributes over social media, with dozens of people describing their devastation at such an unexpected tragedy.
