PJ police chief describes “truly frightening” increase in child sex abuse complaints

Portugal’s deputy director of the PJ Judicial police, Carlos Farinha, has revealed that his service is faced with roughly 500 new cases of child sex abuse every three months – a reality he admits to be “truly frightening”. Carlos Farinha’s comments came during the launch of the first book on child sex abuse within the Catholic Church, written by journalist Sónia Simões, and launched just six weeks before the capital is due to host the largest youth event in the Roman Catholic calendar. According to Carlos Farinha “it is essential to take measures to end sexual criminality against minors”.
