Police collect 173 firearms, 1,523 rounds in ‘Safe weapons’ operation

Portugal’s main police force in urban areas, the PSP, collected 173 firearms, most of them believed to have been used for hunting, and 1,523 rounds of ammunition and cartridges, during its ‘Safe weapons, summer tour‘ operation, it announced today. The operation took place between July 22 and August 11, its aim being to raise awareness of rules in place regarding the possession and use of firearms, encouraging their licensing, and the collection of unlicensed weapons. According to a PSP statement, 103 police officers from the force’s weapons and explosives services carried out 94 actions in more than 50 municipalities in all the districts of mainland Portugal, as well as in Sabugal on the island of Madeira.
