Police detain suspect wanted in China for alleged bribery in sports

Suspect could face 10-year jail term in China

Portugal’s Judicial Police (PJ) have detained a 57-year-old foreign national in the Aveiro area who is wanted by authorities in China on suspicion of bribery in sport.

In a statement, the PJ said that it carried out a series of actions earlier this week that led to the location and arrest of the suspect in fulfilment of an international arrest warrant issued by Chinese judicial authorities.

“The events took place in July 2017, when the suspect, with the aim of reaching the Chinese Super League, arranged the result of a football match, paying the sum of five million yuan (around 630,000 euros), so that the other team would lose,” the statement adds.

According to the PJ, the suspect – who could face a sentence of 10 years in prison in China – was brought before Porto Court of Appeal, where he was ordered to report twice a week to authorities, as well as handing over his passport.
