Police drone finds missing elderly man in Vila do Bispo

Drone helped locate missing man

A GNR police drone found an 80-year-old man who went missing in Hortas do Tabual, Vila do Bispo.

Authorities were alerted to the man’s disappearance on Tuesday (March 19), leading GNR police to “immediately begin the necessary efforts to locate him” by using its Unmanned Aircraft Systems team (a team specialised in the use of drones) and police tracking dogs.

The man was located as a “hot spot” by a drone in the early hours of Wednesday morning (March 20) in an “isolated and hard-to-reach area” and was found shortly after by GNR agents. He was conscious and did not require hospital care, having been taken to his home.

“GNR thanks all the citizens who volunteered and actively participated in the searches, celebrating the success of this mission, which helped save a human life,” the police force says in a statement to the press.

It also highlights the importance of equipment such as drones in these types of rescue missions.
