Police investigate alleged rape of Irish tourist in Albufeira

Alleged case of rape is the latest horror story coming out of Albufeira

The slew of horror stories coming out of Albufeira continues as an Irish tourist in her 50s has claimed to have been raped by two men in the Algarve town.

According to the UK’s The Sun, police were alerted to the case at around 1am on Monday (August 12), after which the holidaymaker was taken to the hospital by GNR police officers.

PJ criminal police have taken over the investigation and are trying to identify the two alleged rapists, the newspaper reports, adding that the police force is understood to be trying to speak to potential witnesses and checking CCTV cameras in the area.

Not much more information has been made public, with no word yet on the approximate location of the incident or if any arrests have been made.

For Albufeira, however, the incident is just the latest in a string of violent episodes, one of which ended recently with the death of a 19-year-old who was attacked after trying to protect two female friends

Last month, the popular stag and hen party destination was also in the headlines for the wrong reasons after a brawl broke out between several tourists, leading to the violent stabbing of five Dutch holidaymakers. Earlier in July, police had been forced to intervene when another brawl broke out between football fans following the Euro 2024 match between England and Netherlands.

Albufeira’s local council has announced measures to try to bring what it has dubbed “excessive behaviour” under control, at the time as a result of a drunken case of public nudity which now some would argue seems less serious in comparison with what has happened since.
