Albufeira continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons
PJ police are investigating the death of a young man who died after reportedly trying to defend two young women during a violent row in downtown Albufeira in the early hours of this Monday morning (August 5).
According to tabloid newspaper Correio da Manhã, the 19-year-old went into cardiac arrest after he fell to the ground and hit his head at around 3.30am.
INEM emergency medical services were able to resuscitate the victim and take him to the hospital, where he died at around 7.30am.
PJ judicial police have confirmed that they are investigating the case, but have so far refused to reveal the nationality of the victim and the circumstances surrounding his death.
This latest tragedy follows a series of cases of “excessive behaviour” in Albufeira which the local council is desperately trying to bring under control. Notorious for its wild nightlife and drunken stag and hen parties, Albufeira has been trying to shift its image to that of a town and a municipality that is suited for a family holiday. But with numerous cases of violence and drunken excesses repeating themselves time and time again, the local council seems to be, at the very least, fighting an uphill battle.
Nonetheless, the council announced last week several measures which are being taken to tackle the so-called “excessive behaviour”, from the creation of a Code of Conduct for nightlife establishments to the installation of 70 CCTV surveillance cameras.
