Police officers dispute equalization with military and threaten “to return to streets” (in protest)

Police union Sinapol has reacted to the fact that the government has increased salaries for the armed forces suggesting “police were deceived with the idea that there was no more money, but in the end money appeared (…) A police professional should never be paid less than a sergeant or an officer in the armed forces. This is the principle applied in most NATO countries,” Sinapol’s Armando Ferreira told reporters, confusing the picture by saying the union “recognises that the military’s salary increase is fair” but “is against equalisation” with the PSP. Sinapol is ‘demanding’ that salary negotiations be reopened, threatening that if they aren’t, police could return to staging street protests in September. The ministry of internal administration has “remained silent”, say reports.
