Police receive “largest pay increase” ever agreed by a government

But only five of 13 syndicates involved in negotiations are happy with deal

The more than 45,000 members of Portugal’s PSP and GNR police forces are to receive an increase in their ‘risk supplements’ of €300 – taking the payment from the current €100 per month to €400.

The increase – described by PM Luís Montenegro as the largest ever agreed by a Constitutional government – will be paid in three phases: €200 this year, €50 in 2025 and the final €50 in 2026.

Negotiations that have been inherited from a situation of deadlock with the last government also brought the guarantee that the professional statute of the police forces will be revised; salary scales altered and improvements made to health provision.

But in spite of the political ‘jubiliation’ that a deal has finally been signed, only five of the 13 syndicates involved signed their names to it, and those that haven’t are not in the least bit ‘happy’, talking about further ‘forms of protest’.

The fact that this deal has so divided police, also means that the ‘platform’ of syndicates (which did not put its name to this agreement) is also in danger of ‘breaking up’, by dint of having effectively not achieved its purpose (which was a risk supplement equal to that of PJ police counterparts).

All that being said, “no government” has ever increased the pay of security forces in a way like AD’s has, which, for minister of interior administration Margardia Blasco, means yesterday was “historic”.

There will be more where this came from as the unhappy elements in the process digest what has happened (see top story to come), but for now the pay increase applies to every single police agent – with the national syndicate of prison guards hoping its members too are offered a substantial risk supplement increase before parliament breaks up for the summer recess.
