Portugal’s resident population increased again last year – for the fifth year running – mainly due to migration growth, according to the demographic statistics for 2023 published by Statistics Portugal (INE) today.
In 2023, 10,639,726 people lived in Portugal, which represented an increase of 123,105 inhabitants compared to the previous year.
According to the Demographic Statistics 2023, “the population increase resulted from the positive migratory balance”, with a migratory growth rate of 1.47%, offset by the negative natural balance.
It is estimated that close to 190,000 permanent immigrants will have entered Portugal, 13.3% more than estimated for 2022, with just over half being men, 80.8% of working age and more than 70% born and previously resident in a country outside the European Union.
On the other hand, 33,666 people left the country, 8.8% more than the previous year – the overwhelming majority of them of working age, mainly men (67.5%) and 52.3% travelling to a member state of the European Union.
