The town of Fronteira in Portalegre saw the replacement of its bridge over Ribeira Grande – destroyed in storms almost two years ago – inch slowly forwards today, with the signing ceremony for the construction of a new structure, taking place in the presence of infrastructure minister Miguel Pinto Luz. Mr Luz described the district generally as “an island” when it comes to good road connectivity . He admitted he was not in the town to announce the construction of any highways, but the government is ‘committed’ to finding solutions to reverse Portalegre’s comparative isolation – and the resulting loss in competitiveness, all of it due, he stressed, to a lack of public investment.
