Portimão accident leaves one dead and three injured

The head-on collision happened shortly before 07h00 this morning on the EN125 stretch between Portimão Hospital and the new bridge.

One person has died, and three people were injured this morning in a head-on collision in Portimão. The accident happened shortly before 07h00 when two passenger cars collided on the EN125 between Portimão Hospital and the new bridge over the Arade.

“The emergency services were activated at 06h58”, said Portimão’s Fire Department spokesperson David Franco, “eight minutes later, we arrived on scene with all the necessary [rescue] services”.

The operation involved 44 men and 20 vehicles, including the Portimão Fire Department, the Lagoa Volunteer Fire Department, the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Municipal Civil Protection Service, and the Concessionária Algarve Litoral.

This stretch of the EN125 is known for accidents, where officials suspect a miscalculated  manoeuvre and speeding possibly provoked the collision.

According to CMTV’s live coverage of the accident, the victim, a 53-year-old man living in Switzerland, was on his way to Faro airport with his two daughters, aged 21 and 23. The driver of the second car, a 39-year-old man, and the two women were transported to Portimão Hospital, with two of the injured in serious condition.

Both cars were completely destroyed and have been removed from the road, which will remain closed while clean-up procedures are underway.
