Sports lovers have a lot to look forward to in Portimão this February

Portimão promises to be a top destination for sports fans this February, with a jam-packed schedule featuring everything from high-speed racing and gymnastics to cycling.

The first events are scheduled for the Algarve International Racetrack (AIA), where two major motorsport events will take place. From February 14 to 16, the prestigious endurance race “6 Hours Gulf Racing” will welcome international teams and drivers for a high-octane showdown. The action continues from February 21 to 23 with the “F4 Spain Winter Championship”, where rising stars of Formula 4 will battle it out in preparation for the 2025 season.

On February 15, the spotlight shifts to rhythmic gymnastics, as Portimão hosts an esteemed competition organised by the Clube de Instrução e Recreio Mexilhoeirense. Taking place at the sports pavilion of the José Sobral school in Mexilhoeira Grande, the event will see gymnasts of all ages showcasing their talents. The event will include the Territorial Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship (2nd Division), the 1st Division Preparation Tournament, and a special showcase for younger gymnasts. Entry is free.

Meanwhile, those looking to celebrate Valentine’s Day will be able to take part in a Romantic Walk on February 16. Organised by Sociedade Vencedora Portimonense, the free scenic riverside walk starts at 9.30am from the bandstand near Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes, allowing couples to “celebrate love in a healthy way and in contact with nature.”

One of the biggest highlights of the month will be the 51st Volta ao Algarve cycling competition, kicking off from Portimão on February 19 at 11.40am. As one of the most prestigious cycling events on the international calendar, the race features a new route packed with thrilling challenges. The starting line at Portimão’s riverside will see elite cyclists embark on a 190-kilometre journey to Lagos.

From February 20 to 22, the Portimão Trampoline Open 2025 will continue the high-octane action, taking place at Portimão Arena and featuring top trampoline and tumbling athletes from across the country. Organised by Algarve Gym Portimão, this electrifying competition promises “spectacular acrobatic displays and a vibrant atmosphere for spectators.”

Football fans will also have something to look forward to on February 21 at 7.45pm, when Portugal will face England in a UEFA Women’s Nations League clash at the municipal Portimão stadium. Tickets can be purchased online at Blueticket or at Continente (both in-store and online).
