Portimão Hospital extends blood donation hours

Portimão Hospital will have an extended timetable for blood donations starting Monday (December 1). People wishing to donate blood will be able to do so from 8.30am to 5pm on weekdays – a move that is hoped will boost the number of donations made.
According to the hospital, many donors complained the current hours (8.30am-1pm and 2pm-3.30pm) are too limiting.
Cármen Rey, head of the Immunotherapy Unit at Portimão Hospital, explained that while they receive 350 blood donations per month, sometimes this isn’t enough.
“An orthopaedic surgery can use between two and three units of blood while patients with polytrauma (multiple traumatic injuries) can need up to 10,” she explained.
As always, donations can still be made at Portimão Hospital on the first Sunday of every month between 9am and 12.30pm, while Faro Hospital accepts donations on weekdays between 8.30am and 1pm and 3pm and 5pm and Lagos Hospital on the last Thursday of each month between 9am and 1pm.
