Portimão launches postcard to mark railway bridge centenary

The 100th anniversary of the inauguration of Portimão’s railway bridge will be celebrated this weekend by the local council and CTT postal service with the launch of a special postcard highlighting the history of the vital infrastructure.

Around 3,000 copies of the special edition postcard will be printed, featuring a post stamp depicting the railway bridge with a face value of 57 cents.

Taking place at Portimão Museum on Saturday (July 30) at 4pm, the event will also feature the inauguration of an exhibition entitled ‘100 anos – Ponte Ferroviária de Portimão’ (100 Years – Portimão Railway Bridge) featuring photos detailing the bridge’s history over the last century. The exhibition will remain on display until September 11.

Also planned at the museum is a ‘tertúlia’ (a term often used to describe a round-table discussion on a particular topic) at 5pm, focusing on the events that led up to the inauguration of the railway bridge and the importance it has had over the year. The event will be led by the museum’s scientific director José Gameiro and will end with the serving of a 100th anniversary cake.

On the same day at 3pm, an exhibition of stamps related to trains and the railway will be inaugurated at Centro Paroquial da Nossa Senhora do Amparo, which will also host the launch of a commemorative stamp at 4pm on Thursday, August 4.
