Portimão looking to buy 142 houses for public housing

The goal is to provide housing to “families living in inadequate conditions”

Portimão is scanning the market for 142 houses to make available for public housing.

Says the municipal council, the initiative is part of a change to its Local Housing Strategy 2020-2030, which aims to respond to the “urgent need to provide housing to families living in inadequate conditions.”

According to the council’s requirements, the houses must be located in the municipality of Portimão and properly described and registered in the urban property registry and land registry; equipped with a habitation licence or a certificate proving that the property is “exempt from habitation authorisation, if applicable”; completely vacant and unoccupied by people or belongings; and free from any “burdens or charges” at the time of the purchase and sale contract.

Proposals for the construction and sale of houses, ranging from one house to a maximum of 142, can be submitted by individuals or legal entities, whether public or private, who are “full owners of plots of land located within the geographic area of the municipality of Portimão, where the units are built, under construction, or intended to be built.

Adds the council, this also includes those who have a “promise to purchase agreement for plots of land in the same area, provided they have possession of the property and the promise to purchase agreement is legally effective – where the units are built, under construction, or planned to be built.” In the latter case, owners “must provide a declaration authorising the submission of their property for the purpose of this tender.”

Those interested can learn more about the initiative online. The deadline for submitting applications, which must be sent via email to opahabitacao@cm-portimao.pt, is Tuesday, April 16.
