Portimão Museum will unveil a photo exhibition exploring the impact of the pandemic on society this Friday, December 10, the day the town celebrates its municipal holiday.
Entitled ‘Esperança’ (Hope), the exhibition brings together some of the best photos from the 21st Portimão Photographic Competition, which this year was held virtually and allowed people from all over the country to participate.
Just as last year, participants were asked to capture photos that depict the impact Covid-19 is having on society, the solutions found to deal with it and the “hope” for a return to pre-pandemic life.
A total of 120 people took part, with the top prize going to Alexandre Castellani. António Tedim (second place), José Oliveira (third), Elsa Martins (fourth) and Luís Reininho (fifth) complete the top five, while the ‘Jovem’ (Youth) award went to Matilde Gonçalves. Fernando Vajá won the ‘Prémio Especial do Júri’ (Special Jury’s Prize). The four categories were: ‘Finalmente Aqui’ (Finally Here); ‘Saudades deste Momento’ (Missing this Moment); ‘Vejo Cores Muitas Cores’ (I See Colours Many Colours), and ‘Felicidade é Isto’ (This is Happiness).
Meanwhile, a paintings exhibition by artist António Carmo will also be inaugurated on the same day.
Entitled ‘Cores da Viagem’ (Colours of the Journey), it invites people to join the artist on a “chromatic and poetic” journey through locations where Portuguese culture has left a mark.
Says the artist, “it is an homage to our people, traditions, flavours, culture and our way of being in life and in the world”.
Both exhibitions open at 5pm on Friday and can be visited on Tuesday from 2.30pm to 6pm and Wednesday to Sunday from 1am to 6pm. ‘Hope’ will remain on display until April 24, 2022, while ‘Colours of the Journey’ can be visited until March 13, 2022.
