Portimão Sardine Festival returns in August

Portimão’s hugely popular Sardine Festival is poised to make its return, opening on Wednesday (August 3) and running until Sunday (August 7).

This year, the event takes on a new format with a “record” number of restaurants and other outlets taking part.

For those who love the traditional dish of sardines, boiled potatoes and salad, it will be available at 13 restaurants – À Ravessa, Casa Bica, Dona Barca, Forte e Feio, KiBom, Mané, O Pipo, Peixarada, Retiro do Peixe Assado, Taberna da Maré, Trinca Espinhas, Ú Venâncio and Zizá – while 15 others will be offering all kinds of sardine-based specialities, including bruschettas, pizzas, even sardine-shaped biscuits.

The town’s riverside area will be the place to make for with all kinds of ‘sardinha no pão’ snacks on sale, leading to the old Lota fish market where more delicacies will be on offer, as well as handicrafts.

And of course, there are five nights of musical entertainment to accompany the show, presenting big names like Deolinda (Wednesday), Carolina Deslandes (Thursday), Carminho (Friday), Herman José (Saturday) and the Orquestra de Acordeões and the Manuel Lopes Quartet (Sunday).

The festival opens at 7pm everyday, and closes at 1am.
