Portimão’s former customs building to become new cultural venue

The Palacete Domingos Leonardo Vieira, once home to the Customs and Fiscal Guard, will be adapted to host cultural activities.

Portimão City Council has signed an agreement with the Portuguese State to manage public real estate assets related to the Palacete Domingos Leonardo Vieira.

This ancient mansion, where the Customs and Tax Guard operated on the Rua Júdice Biker, is one of the city’s iconic buildings.

“From now on, the property will be recovered and adapted by the City of Portimão to create a new cultural space with different features, including a conference room and exhibition rooms, especially intended for contemporary art exhibitions and the display of intangible heritage for the next 50 years”, said the City Council.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony last week in Lisbon, during which 17 municipalities officiated agreements involving 27 unused or vacant State properties to be transferred to municipal management.
