Portimão’s largest park, Parque da Juventude, is reopening on Saturday, April 26
After closing to the public for one year and a half to undergo major renovations, Portimão’s Parque da Juventude (Youth Park) is due to finally reopen on Saturday (April 26) at 3pm.
It’s a long-awaited moment for the population of Portimão, which has been longing for the return of the municipality’s largest park to its glory days. The park was inaugurated in 1996 in the heart of Portimão and became a popular spot for families, skaters, cyclists and anyone looking to enjoy time outdoors. Its BMX track, skate park, sports field and vast green spaces were its main calling cards, but over the years the park became increasingly abandoned and rundown.

Now, after undergoing renovations totalling around €1.3 million, the park is reopening with a brand-new Radical Park – a dream come true for the local skate and BMX scene. Inspired by the iconic Santa Catarina fortress in Praia da Rocha, this sleek new setup boasts a street zone and a bowl.
Spread across 15,000 square metres the revamped park now includes a breathtaking elevated walkway through the treetops, a scenic watchtower providing views over the park, and completely refreshed green spaces and walking paths.
The north and south entrances to the park have been renovated, as well the existing playground at the north entrance, while a new play area will be unveiled at the south entrance. The old skate park has been converted into a new sports field, featuring a 3×3 basketball arena (part of the “3×3 BasketArt” project by the Portuguese Basketball Federation) and a futsal pitch. Meanwhile, visitors will also be able to break a sweat at the new street workout area.
The revamp also includes a café overhaul, new restrooms, a restored lake with a new deck, and water-purifying plants.
The official reopening ceremony is part of a larger program featuring several sports, cultural and musical events, taking place throughout the weekend at Parque da Juventude.
